Had a 3hour and 20min Cox outage last night starting at about 0210MST. Possible this was a scheduled maintenance event, given the time.
Now power levels on my upstream channels have dropped dramatically from about 40-45db to 25-35. What is more disturbing is that channel 3 @ 29.9Mhz is fluctuating all over the place now. Anywhere from 23 to 35dBmV within a 5min polling interval. Now seeing really bad latency again. It looks like either something failed and is limping along, or someone broke something last night. (see attached past24 hour graph of upstream power levels) Notice the decrease in upstream power and the blue line (channel 3) swinging wildly.
In the past couple weeks my node got the increased channel-width on the 4th channel bringing all of them to the 6.4Mhz carrier. Since then I'd been seeing marginally improved performance with decreased upstream latency variation.
However, after this early morning outage/mainteance today, performance is again in the toilet tonight.

What is wrong with Cox?
Their pricing is atrocious to begin with, their advertised pricing is bait-and-switch as the website advertises and price and then goes "SURPRISE! You need a contract to get that", and worst of all, they are the only ISP AFAIK to have bandwidth caps in CT. Comcast doesn't have bandwidth caps, Charter doesn't, Altice doesn't, Frontier doesn't, Atlantic Broadband doesn't, and the local yokel Thames Valley has a 2TB soft cap that AFAIK is not enforced, but those areas also have Comcast.
I'm looking to buy a house soon in a Cox town, so I am looking at where Frontier offers service, and any offer I make will have a contingency clause requiring Frontier to be installed and tested at 45/6 or better before the sale can go through. Luckily, Frontier appears to be rolling out fiber in the area, and doing 150/150 for $40/mo for 2 years. I'm not dealing with these asshats at Cox. It's quite an accomplishment that they are significant WORSE than Comcast on the whole, which is saying something considering that Comcast is a criminal organization! At least with Comcast though, the ridiculous price they advertise is the same ridiculous price you pay, and if you want to use 10TB of data, you can (although that's not true for many other Comcast markets).

Its got a ton of corrected errors and fills up after every restart. Anyone have any ideas what it is?
Thanks

Cox Data Caps in Rhode Island
I'm moving and one place I'm looking at only has Cox.
I know Comcast doesn't enforce their data caps in markets where they compete against FIOS and Rhode Island has a large FIOS footprint
So do any RI Cox customers here know if Cox enforces their cap policy in RI?
Thanks

[Phone] Cox Voice Fast Track Migration
Under the topic of "you asked, we did," beginning today if you would like to get your Cox Digital Telephone service early migrated to Cox Voice, we have a solution for you. We've created a "Fast Track Migration" plan that jumps you up on the transition list if you want early access to Nomorobo, the Cox Voice Everywhere app or HD Calling.
How it works is when you contact customer care (chat should work fine) you'll have a code added to your account. As we pull our weekly migration lists, we'll do our best to prioritize those, so in the next 2-3 weeks after adding the code you should be migrated one overnight. You'll get notification via email after the switch, so when you contact care, be sure they have your current email.
If you don't sign up for Fast Track, you'll be scheduled as one of the regular batches between now and sometime in late 2019. Most will qualify for Fast Track, but you will need to be on an eMTA (not circuit switched) and use Cox for your Long Distance Provider (not a third party).
Fire away with any additional questions here. As I said this is rolling out today, so the rep you talk to may be new to the process, so be gentle (grin).

coaxial cable RG6
I have the need to run some RG6 from one building to another approx 300FT for an alarm system connecting from a splitter provided by COX to a Arris TM804eMTA. Naturally I don't want to get HomeDepot brand, but looking for a decent brand/size. Can anyone recommend a vendor/supply house in the Southern California area? thanks in advance. R/

[Gigablast] Cox website shows Netgear CM1100-Netgear site doesn't
Cox lists among its certified modems the Netgear CM1100, with the CM1100 setup guide and user manual (March 2018) attached. The Netgear site does not (yet) have that model. Amazon, BestBuy, NewEgg, etc sites don't show it either. Google search doesn't find it. Cox is also now advertising Gigablast service is available in Omaha. Before buying the CM1000 to upgrade from Cox Ultimate, wondered if anyone knows anything about the anticipated CM1100 availability?

[VA] Data Caps?
I could be changing ISPs from Verizon FIOS in the next few weeks but I want to be sure I'm comparing apples to apples. I won't do direct comparisions to avoid any kind of flame war, but will only ask a few questions as I don't see specific/recent information to my area.
Yes I understand most of the differences and I still have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem from some time ago that I can use if I go in this direction.
I am in Hampton, VA.
Does Cox HSI have data caps? If they do not, are they planning to have data caps within the next year? If they do have data caps, what are they for each tier of service (or is it uniform across all tiers)? These are critical to my decision making process in whether I move to Cox, stay with FIOS, or possibly see what else is out there...
Many thanks in advance.

[DOCSIS] Odd responses on ports 5222 and 5269?
Tonight I had a friend of mine run a nmap port scan on me just to do a quick check up of my router health / settings. He informed me that I had ports 5222 and 5269 open. These do show closed or stealth on other online services. I figured it was a fluke.
---
Host is up (0.00050s latency).
Not shown: 998 filtered ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
5222/tcp open xmpp-client
5269/tcp open xmpp-server
---
After awhile (hour) of trying different things we realized he would see this with just the modem connected and nothing else. Later we realized it was showing the same for everyone on my node (changing the IP up and down 1 digit) and even with my modem unplugged. I had him try a friend of mine with Comcast, it did not show this behavior.
The server on 5269 was also responding, unfortunately I don't have the nmap output.
What happened here? A few minutes later, its closed / filtered again.

[AZ] Twitch Performance
All,
I haven't seen it pop up here specifically, but on other sites (where I don't post) there is some discussion on Twitch performance, I thought I would give an update. If someone wants to relay it to other areas, that's fine with me.
It appears both Cox and Twitch made some network changes around the same time last week that is causing some latency. Because our change involved removing some equipment, we can't just fail back. We have a ticket open with Twitch and they confirm the issue. We're working on timing, which I think is a concern on the Twitch end since BlizzCon just started. Our current traces are not showing impairment at this point, but we expect a change on the Twitch side no later than next week that should resolve if there is a lingering issue.
So, TL;DR - Known issue on both sides with Twitch. Seems to be just AZ, looks OK at the moment but network changes next week.
Feel free to comment if you have a different experience or can add anything to the view we have.

Natural disaster fail over ?
SO.. AT some point a really bad Earthquake will hit Southern California. Most likely The San Andreas Fault will fail. There are many others of course too like the Newport-Inglewood Fault. The SAF tho has some possible interesting effects on Cox. There is a LOT of fiber and microwave links that go directly across the fault along the I-10 near Palm SPrings. Also the fault may effects things serious all the down past the bottom of the Salton Sea to Mexico. This would effect things that go along I-8.
So all of LA, Riverside and San Bernadino counties would immd go offline for power and fiber/wires in the ground would be disrupted along with point to point links and sat dishes would immd be offline out of alignment or 100% done. So a huge amount of backbone technology and backbone datacenters will go offline everywhere in So Cal. Everything in So Cal will no longer be there for maybe weeks to months.
San Diego will most likely be OK, but isolated and without power most likely.
So.. Im in Arizona. My question is Cox has planned for a total loss of everything in southern California ? There are major internet switch centers there too. MAEs. That will all be gone. Is there a plan for this ? Does Cox have a connection for Phoenix that goes east or north ? Everything going west will be dead.
Im just wondering in a more serious manner what kind of real fault tolerance and fail over plans Cox has for this inevatable natural disaster ? As a LOT of buis clients rely on Cox internet im interested in a real answer. Is there a real plan for this ?
Also most likely all of arizona will loose power. The power grid will fall over because of the loss of a load and damage to the grid in So Cal. So for hours, maybe longer, Phoenix will be without power state wide. This power loss of the grid might also effect Vegas and cities north of so cal.
Planning for this is possible. It would be good to have a play book for this. Im wondering if there is a plan.
This whole question is reasonable to ask as a buisness in Phoenix, and even residential customers, would have a good reason to know what the plan is.

[Modem] Upgrade to 3.1 if never plan on going past the 100/10 plan?
Just couple questions, im switching from centurylink to Cox here in Phoenix because i cant stand the service in my area. I plan on going with the 100/10 plan and never plan on paying for a faster one (cant afford it). I do need a new modem and dont want to rent so with that in mind, is it worth dropping 150 dollars to get a 3.1 modem or would i be okay sticking with a good 3.0 one and save the money.
If id be fine with 3.0, any recommendations under $100 on a modem? I read somewhere avoid ones with puma chips but i havent researched enough to understand fully what that means or what modems dont have it. Thanks!

[NV] ARRIS TM3402 eMTA only available on Gigablast Tier
called cox late last night to inquire about upgrading from a Cisco DPQ3212 eMTA to the Arris TM3402 wanted to move to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem without having to pay a rental fee for a wireless gateway i have my own wireless router so i do not need a gateway so no need to pay additional rental fees so i figured since i have all services with cox the rental fee of a eMTA is waived since you need it for telephone use so the phone rep told me that my local cox solutions store has the ARRIS TM3402 eMTA i stock so i said cool i will call in the morning to inquire about it fast forward to this morning call up my local cox solutions store and yes they carry the modem and tell me all i have to do is come in and exchange the eMTA that i have now for the ARRIS TM3402 so i head over there exchange it he scans the new modem adds it to my account i get home call cox to make sure everything is good and then i find out after spending over 2 hours on the phone with tech support that i can not use this modem while being on any internet speed tier other then the gigablast tier long story short if i wanna upgrade at this moment to a docsis 3.1 modem i either have to pay additional rentals fees or buy my own or upgrade to the gigablast tier so basically there is no way to get a docsis 3.1 eMTA in my situation without spending additional money
just thought i would share this on here in case anyone else was thinking about doing this just saving you a bunch of time and headaches and i hope this changes really soon
