So, my power went out for about 90 minutes today. My server is on an oversized UPS, so it stayed up, but the internet went out at around the 30 minute mark and I lost communication with it. That made me wonder about what kind of backups Cox typically has in place for different services when power outages occur.
I have heard that telephone service is on UPS and generator at the node and should stay up indefinitely, while the user's VOIP modem has an internal battery that should last around 8 hours or so. Is that the case? What about internet services? and television?
It seems odd to me that they would (or even could) power VOIP equipment, but not internet equipment, so I don't understand why the internet would go out after around 30 minutes. I have confirmed via the various device logs that no device on my end (server, router, modem, switch) ever lost power and that the internet outage was due to the modem losing sync.
Thoughts?
