I have gigablast PON from cox.
I have a server in a michigan data center.
I have the server listening on port 5522 for sshd to avoid lame bruteforce bots.
I have a GRE tunnel established to another virtual machine on the same physical host, using the IANA 10.0.0.0/24 range for network over tunnel.
I attempted to upload a text file to the server using SFTP over SSH, connecting directly to the internet facing IP of the server.
I noticed the upload speed was peaking at 50kb/s..
I then connected to the internal ip of the server so the traffic would go over the GRE tunnel. I was surprised to see that the upload speed of that connection was 500x greater than the connection not encapsulated in GRE.....
I am at a loss as to why.
The server is not behind a firewall, hardware or otherwise.
The gigablast connection is behind a ubiquity
