Referring to http://www.cablewifi.com/ public hotspots, not home internet.
Their performance tends to be poor.
1) Most seem to be outside. It almost seems like you need to trespass, loiter, or stand in the middle of traffic to get enough signal strength to solidly connect. The Android signal strength indicator tends to hover between connected but 0 bars and 1 out of 3 bars, with rare peaks of 2 out of 3 bars when doing the aforementioned movements.
2) It seems from the uneven signal strengths between the CoxWiFi and CableWiFi indicators that there are two routers put next to each other rather than 1 router broadcasting multiple SSIDs through what DD-WRT calls Virtual Interfaces. Colocating routers could be causing interference.
3) PPTP Passthrough does not seem to be enabled on all CoxWiFi/CableWiFi/TWCWiFi routers, or my PPTP VPN is getting filtered by some of them. My VPN has had 28 days of uptime since last reboot.
