Something that always bugged me is when you go to the list of Cox approved modems (see link below) they list a number of gateway (modem/router) devices as "Preferred". I have been told that Cox suggest gateways for people lacking technical knowledge who want a plug and play option. Does that mean Cox assumes the majority of it's customer base is lacking technical knowledge, or because gateways are cheaper to manufacture? Or is this just fluffery to make it seem like Cox is in line with ISP's like Verizon who by default force gateways upon customers.
I always thought the ability to use your own equipment to be one of Cox biggest strength, but then why don't they reinforce it?
