I have noticed that my data usage is only reported semi-accurately for data I consume through video streaming services like Netflix. It seems that somewhere between 80-90% of the actual throughput is reflected in the data use meter. (My router is set to report usage to me for comparison.)
The odd thing is that my peer-to-peer traffic is only reported at about 10% of the actual usage (he reports with a big grin on his face). I have segregated the different types of usage from day to day to reconfirm my findings.
Is Cox trying extra hard to accurately measure the traffic from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime as a means of forcing people who have cut the cable TV cord to have to pay for higher tiers of Internet service? I really can't complain about my current situation as now I never exceed the 250 GB monthly cap.
It wasn't always this way. I first noticed the reduction in reported peer-to-peer data use in August/September of 2013. For 4 of the 6 months prior to that time I exceeded the cap by up to 50 GB per month.
I have an older Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem. Cox keeps telling me to upgrade but I currently get bandwidth of >25Mbps with this modem. Do you think there is any chance that if I upgrade my modem that whatever glitch is vastly under reporting my peer-to-peer might be eliminated?
I look forward to your comments.
