When I woke up at about 5:30am on Saturday morning, I noticed there was no internet service in the house. It's usually futile to call Cox when this happens, but I did anyway. An automated message confirmed the outage and indicated it would be repaired by 8:48am.
8:48 came, no internet. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, no internet. The Cox trucks eventually showed up, as well as the police. Via neighbors who had talked to some of the Cox technicians on site, I learned that all of the green boxes (see attached photo) had been broken into and had hardware stolen at some point after 5am that morning. There are 3 or 4 of these in our neighborhood, in the front yards of certain houses. By about 2pm, the technicians wrapped up their work and service was restored.
I have never heard of this sort of crime before. Does anyone know what in these boxes is so valuable? Is there a lucrative black market for such components?
A minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but I hope Cox has a way to prevent this from recurring in our neighborhood and elsewhere.
