[ALL] Motorola SB6180 modem runs a bit hot?

I'm a new Cox cable user, and I have to say I absolutely LOVE it. The support and service I've gotten is great. One thing I've noticed - I'm using a SB6180 modem, and it seems to run a bit hot. There is clearly a power-hungry IC near the top of the circuit board inside (I looked through the vents, I didn't pry it open) and a large heatsink. That heatsink constantly puts out a surprising amount of heat! The temperature at the top of the unit is probably around 120F. I am not sure if this is completely normal, or my modem has a defect. It's been operating fine for about a month, I checked the modem log for errors and there were only a few listed, and I haven't noticed any outages, performance problems, or reboots. But still the modem runs surprisingly warm! That makes me concerned that the modem might fail prematurely and need to be replaced for another $100. One other question - I read at one point if you replace a modem, you need to call Cox and give someone the MAC address and serial number of the modem so they could activate it. However, when I look at Cox's web site, their instructions basically say "plug in the modem, you're done." When I installed the modem Cox supplied me, I just plugged it in and surfed (to my pleasant surprise coming from the crappy world of DSL and PPPoE), are the other instructions for if you have a different modem that doesn't come from Cox? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The performance I'm getting going from DSL to Cable is a tenfold bandwidth increase. I should have switched long ago!!!
