Recently, my Internet connectivity became intermittent with web browsers unable to consistently resolve common websites. Speed tests on Cox's site worked fine. Cox tech support suggested getting a new modem (though all signals and power levels were in normal range) or they could have someone come out to check on premises.
In my own troubleshooting before taking either of those steps, I found that if I switched my modem's DNS servers from Google DNS servers (which they'd been set to for over a year now since the last time Cox's DNS servers failed), to instead auto-pull DNS server IPs from Cox, the intermittent connectivity issues went away. Set it back to Google's, problems returned. Set it back to auto-grab the DNS server IPs from Cox, clears up again.
Any ideas why this might be? Are there widespread issues with Google's DNS servers this week? Or perhaps Cox is trying to force users to stick with their DNS servers so they can more easily mine the surfing habits of their customers for future advertising purposes? Or maybe there is some other explanation.
