TITLE EDIT: I've changed the title of this thread to better reflect what I think I'm seeing. I didn't do it to inflame opinion. I'm just trying to have it be more meaningful. The first part of the thread might feel a bit "off-topic" because of that.
This has been driving me nuts (and probably the Cox people I've been working with) for the last 10 days or so. When I log into www.cox.com with Google Chrome, I can't do, or even navigate to, much of my account (for instance, Profile and Preferences). The symptoms I'm getting are:
- In general, www.cox.com is slow.
- Usually, I get a red error message on the page saying: "We're sorry, an unexpected error has occurred with this application. Please try again. If you need help, contact Customer Support or Live Chat for assistance."
- Sometimes, I'll get dumped to their full-page login screen as if I hadn't logged in correctly.
- Sometimes I get put back on the Account Overview page instead of the specific section I'm trying to get to.
- Sometimes I get a Cannot Connect error page.
- Sometimes I can't log in at all (and after two attempts, it forces a 30 minute cool-down).
- In general, in Chrome it usually won't let me sign in, and if it does I can't access my Profile. In Edge and Chrome, about half the time it won't let me sign in, but if it does I'm fine. In all cases, the cox site is dirt slow.
Up until now, I've been able to do this with Microsoft Edge. Cox can't seem to find anything wrong with my account or their site (they've logged into the account from wherever they are and had no problem). I can't see anything wrong with my setup (my firewall logs don't show anything being blocked and I can get everywhere else on the internet (including my bank) without problem). On the off-chance this is a browser problem, I filed a report with Chrome:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=711930
Today, I tried to pay my Cox bill online with both Chrome and Edge. I couldn't do it with either one. I'm DM-ing Cox now, but I thought I'd ask here for input.
Things I've tried:
- Cleared browsing data (except for Media Licenses) many times.
- Run the Chrome Cleanup Tool.
- Reset the browser to default.
- Tried w/o extensions (Incognito) and by just manually disabling them all.
- Uninstalled beta Chrome and tried Released version of Chrome. Didn't sign in to Google, no extensions, default profile.
- Tried in my daily VPN (server in California) and by connecting without a VPN.
- Tracerts with and without my VPN look fine (see below).
- Tried different Cox DNS servers (68.111.16.25 and .30, 68.105.29.12 and .13).
- Tried Google DNS Servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
- Done ipconfig /release, /renew, and /flushdns.
- Logged into the same account from a different computer.
- Added the "--disable-web-security" flag to my Chrome target line and turned off all my extensions.
- Confirmed Javascript and AJAX are enabled.
- Enabled 3rd Pary cookies.
- Run "sfc /scannow" from a PowerShell (Admin) window.
- I'm now getting the same problem with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.
- Plugged my computer directly into the SB8200 cable modem.
- Turned off Wifi on my phone and tried via LTE with Chrome (IOW I bypassed my browser, computer, router, cable modem (i.e., my whole wired network), and Cox's network).
I only NOTICED the problem after getting the new cable modem, new pfSense box, and set up the VPN in the pfSense box. I think I ran across it while testing that I could successfully navigate where I needed to go. The last time I'd even come close to my Profile page was a couple of weeks before that when I'd paid my bill online. I can't remember the last time I tried changing my Cox profile or password. But, I know I've done it some time in the past from my current location (perhaps 6 months or so ago).
EDIT 1: I've added things I've done in this thread to this OP so it's all in one place.
IMPORTANT EDIT: After some hardware finagling that might have been extraneous, I again tried a direct connection to my SB8200 cable modem and had no trouble. Going through the pfSense box still gives me problems with 3rd party cookies disabled. But, with them enabled, it seems to be ok. So, if anyone is having this issue, try enabling 3rd party cookies just on Cox's sites:
In Chrome, under Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Privacy > Content Settings > Manage Exceptions, add exceptions for BOTH cox.com and cox.net:
[*.]cox.com
[*.]cox.net
It just seems odd that in all the world, the only place I have trouble with while running through my pfSense box is Cox with 3rd party cookies disabled.
