18 months ago a friend of mine died and his wife (who lived in the UK at the time) gave me a bunch of his stuff, and among those things was an SB6182 modem; identical to one I already had. At the time I was living outside of Cox territory, and I was going through a lot of my stuff and getting rid of things that I didn't need, including one of those modems.
Now last weekend, I just moved into Cox territory again, and tried to activate the remaining SB6182 modem I have. Lo and behold, the installer tells me that he can't activate it because the account it was last tied to was in had a balance due. That would make sense because he died after all, so in all likelihood his bills went unpaid for a while.
But now I'm stuck with a modem that I can't use, and I have no idea where I sent the other modem I had. Has anybody run into this problem before? And since when are cable modems tied to account bills? Why wouldn't it be an address/social security number and instead be tied to equipment that is easily replaced? (About 6 years ago, Cox once gave me shit because the previous tenant at a house I rented didn't pay their bills, but now it's suddenly tied to cable modems?)
Regardless, the account that this modem goes to will not and can not ever be paid, so am I really going to have to buy a new modem now? Or is there another way to resolve this?
