I just want to let users know that COX is engaging in a dubiously legal practice of billing people $25+ fees for declined credit cards for whatever the reason. I just got hit by this insane fee on a $50/month bill. Needless to say, I am totally outraged. I have no idea why the card was declined as I was able to use the same card one hour after receiving the declined autopay notice. I was not even informed by Chase that my card was declined. Has anyone else has had their payment mysteriously declined and hit with this fee. If so please reply to this thread.
Given that COX is the only high speed internet provider in the area there is little I can do if they refuse to remove the fee except suck it up. Are there any lawyers or people familiar with law out there that can comment on the legality of charging $25 for declined credit cards. It seems like hitting users with large unjustified fees, fine print or not, should be illegal: .Credit cards are not checks and I am pretty certain CC merchants don't charge fees for declined cards.
