Cox Communications will launch a nationwide rollout of high-speed residential gigabit service in metro Phoenix, Las Vegas and Omaha, President and CEO Pat Esser announced Thursday morning in south Scottsdale. The Mark Taylor luxury community, under construction in Scottsdale and the site of Esser's announcement, will be among the first sites to get the ultra high-speed Internet service.
"The Phoenix metropolitan area will be one of the first places Cox will (offer) gigabit high-speed service," Esser said. Cox selected Phoenix because it is one of the company's largest metropolitan customers. Cox, which is headquartered in Atlanta, has provided service in Phoenix for 12 years.
Cox will offer residential gigabit service in all markets across the country by the end of 2016, Esser said. The company already offers gigabit service to commercial customers. Among residential users, ultra high-speed service is especially helpful to those who use the Internet to play games and download large files. A data speed of 1 gigabit is roughly 100 times faster than current Internet speeds.
